A lot can happen in the middle of nowhere.

Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a hapless car salesman overrun by debt, orchestrates the kidnapping of his wife in order to obtain a sizeable ransom from her wealthy father. However, all does not go according to plan. Things quickly go awry in the hands of two inept henchman (played with aplomb by Coen-regulars Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare), leaving a trail of bodies in their wake. Enter the very chipper and very pregnant Police Chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), tasked with putting together the pieces in the murder of a local state trooper, who happens upon the steadily unraveling conspiracy.

After building their reputation with a string of critically-lauded features, the Coens appeared to stumble with The Hudsucker Proxy (1995), their foray into classic screwball comedy, as well as their most expensive film at the time. Now acknowledged as a cult classic, the film was, however, a massive commercial failure that threatened to derail the upward trajectory of the duo. Their comeback would come in the form of an offbeat, grisly black comedy of intricate construction and quirky intensity—a perfect distillation of their career up to that point.

Set in their home state of Minnesota, Fargo—their sixth feature—firmly landed the brothers squarely in the mainstream, garnering numerous plaudits and awards, including competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival—an award previously won by the pair for Barton Fink (1991)—as well seven Academy Award nominations, ultimately winning two. A fiendishly clever kidnap caper that's at once a comedy of errors, a Midwestern satire, a taut suspense thriller, a violent tale of criminal misfortune—and, above all, quintessentially Coens.
